Everybody and his brother has his favorite brand of HVAC system. However, my personal advice (based on my experience) to all of you when your heating/cooling system dies is don't shop by brand but shop for a good contractor. The truth is there is nothing special about a specific brand. Nowadays, a lot of HVAC components are outsourced with a very few exceptions. I always tell my customers and I'll repeat again: "Choose a good contractor, keep it simple and support American!". Here are my thoughts: 1. Daikin, Amana, GMC, Goodman (made by Daikin) - those are my preferred brands. Why? Made in the USA (they have huge plants in Texas and Tennessee). Best value. The manufacturer is improving the quality year by year. Very easy to find replacement parts along with reasonable pricing. Those units will most likely outlast every other brand if installed correctly and serviced on regular bases. 2. Lennox (made by Lennox) - this would be my second choice. Why? Made in the USA and very reliable systems. There’s only one problem, they're on the expensive side including replacement parts. However, if you’ve got the money you would never go wrong with Lennox. 3. Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Heil, Comfort Maker, ArcoAire, TempStar (made by United Technologies) - not a huge fan here since Carrier moved to Mexico over 2,500 jobs! Carrier products made in Indiana are long gone. Starting 2016 they are all assembled either in Mexico with Chinese components, or fully made in China and shipped to the USA in cargo containers. However, if you really like things made outside USA I would try my best to give you a good price on Carrier. 4. Trane, American Standard, AmeriStar (made by Ingersoll Rand) - I'm on the edge here! Why? They used to be one of the best made by Trane here in the USA. Truth is, there’s nothing special anymore in Trane units. A couple of years ago Trane was bought by the Irish company Ingersoll Rand. So, starting 2019 they decided to produce stuff in Mexico/China using cheap labor (and screw the Americans) in order to increase their profit. However, if you really want one of these systems I would give you a good price on AmeriStar - that's the only "Trane" brand still made in the USA. 5. York, Coleman, Nordyne(made by Johnson Controls) - run away from those! Why? York used to be one of the best. Not anymore. They are still made in the USA. However, about 10 years ago they decided to go to "the highest efficiency" aluminum micro-channel coils. The results are leaking micro-channels left and right within a few years of installation. So, please, don't ask me to install any York or micro-channel product. I would respectfully decline. So, let me tell you the key to a long running HVAC system: First, buy the most simple system available. Stay away from the high efficiency unless you're ready to spend a good chunk of money when they break. Yes, they break and they break more often since they are full with electronics and sensors. Second, change your filter on a regular basis (no exception). Make sure to install pleated filters with ratings between 7 and 10 MERV. Everything below 7 and above 10 MERV is no good to your system. Run away from so-called “allergen filters”. Most of the time they do more harm on your system than any good. Just install an UV light if you’d like clean air in your house. Third, maintain your system twice per year (spring and autumn). Fourth, install surge protectors exclusively to protect all your HVAC equipment. Lastly, if possible seal and insulate against air leaks and heat loss all your metal HVAC ducts with mastic and thick insulation. In the end, everything breaks (including humans). And because I'm a technician (not a salesman) I fix everything! You shall not worry about the brand of your HVAC system. You shall worry about the guy you're asking to fix it, the guy putting your new system in, the guy that will be there 24 hours a day, the guy that doesn't treat you like a number, the guy that knows your home and your name. Yes, that one - the Old School Guy. MAKE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM GREAT AGAIN! BY ANGEL
THE SAD TRUTH Haven't you gotten so sick and tired of hearing the same sales pitch from these HVAC guys when they come out for their "free" initial visits? Those "inspections" are nothing more than pre-planned pushy sales tactics. The big companies these guys work for love making those high markups with their huge labor charges to often needlessly install entire new system, rather than just replacing the failed part, which is all that was needed. Don't you feel they're trying to purposely conditioning you on every service call (for them "sales call") to think of your HVAC system as a "consumable product" that must be fully replaced every 10-12 years? Don't you feel every time you call them they're getting pushier and pushier? Let me put it this way. Imagine if every time you go to get an oil change or you need to replace a worn starter in your car some shady service tech tells you: "Well, your car is over 5 years old, you really should think about replacing it completely. Sure, I can add a few more cans of oil to this thing but you're just throwing good money after bad." Sound familiar? THE QUESTION Do you want to be part of this?
